Shake your sequins
Strictly Come Dancing, the British version of Dancing with the Stars, has been one of my favourite shows on TV for years. I love the fact that you get to see celebrities completely outside their comfort zone, often making idiots of themselves, as well as some unexpectedly talented dancers who come out on a really good show. I guess the most surprising winners have probably been the cricketers Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash, both of whom were quiet individuals with zero showbiz experience and more used to wearing cricket whites than skin-tight Lycra trousers and sequins. In fact, I would wager a lot of money that the most risqué outfits either of them ever wore pre-Strictly were bespoke designer suits.

Of course, it isn’t just the male celebrities and male dancers who are covered from head to toe in sequins and startlingly revealing outfits every Saturday night. For some reason my male flatmate loves watching Strictly, even though he hates ballroom dancing and hates reality TV. Hmm, that wouldn’t have anything to do with dancers like Ola Jordan, Aliona Vilani and Katya Varshilas, as well as celebrities like Holly Valance, parading around the dance floor in outfits that make a bikini look reserved would it? The funny thing is that while I’m sure he only started watching the show to drool over the female contestants; he’s actually enjoying the competition now and can even tell a quickstep from a foxtrot and a cha-cha-cha from a salsa.

I haven’t yet persuaded him to get on the dance floor himself and give ballroom dancing a try, despite promising him that I wouldn’t make him wear any sequins unless we turned out to be really good and entered a competition – not very likely with my two left feet and his lack of rhythm! However, when I couldn’t promise him that the other girls in the class would look like the Strictly dancers, he definitely lost interest...
